Overview

The Parish of Guare (10,109 inhabitants in 1982) is a subdivision of Baba Canton, Los Ríos province.
The local tradition says that the town was named for Juana Guare, who owned a inn of regional fame, also used as a convenient place of trade. Guare is the birth place of Blessed Mercedes de Jesús Molina (Maria Mercedes de Jesus Molina y Ayala, 1828-1883; aka the Rose of Guayas, beatified on 1 February 1985 by Pope John Paul II), who founded on 14
April 1873 in Riobamba the order of the Sisters of Mariana de Jesús (Detailed biography). The parish of Guare was established on 4 April 1884.

The Flag

The flag of Guare is green with a blue cross fimbriated white and, in the middle, a white star fimbriated yellow. The star recalls that Guare is one of the parishes of Baba. The star is also a symbol of divine immortality and celestial reward, highlighted in the beatification of Mercedes de Jesús Molina.

The symbols of Guare were designed by the artist José Enrique Rodríguez Vélez (b. 1953), aka Pepín. In his youth, Pepín had to earn his life as a street shoe-shiner. At the time, he uses to recall, he always had at hand a pencil and a piece of paper to draw whatever he found in his environment worth being represented. Decades later, Pepín is now a caricaturist of national fame, who sketched celebrities (such as Diego Maradona, Pelé, Mohamed Alí, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez and George Bush) in several Ecuadorian newspapers. Pepín also designed the symbols of the sports club Deportivo Quevedo and of the Quevedo Cantonal Sports League. He is credited the design of the symbols of cantons (Buena Fe, Quinsaloma, Mocache, and El Empalme) and parishes (La Unión, Guare, Isla de Bejucal, Guare, Los Ángeles and Chacarita).
