The municipality of Macael (6,212 inhabitants in 2008; 4,400 ha) is located in the Sierra de los Filabres, 100 km north of Almería.
Macael is nicknamed "The Town of the White Gold" because of its white marble (known as "Blanco Macael"), already used by the Phoenicians to make sarcophagi and mortars, and subsequently used to build the Roman theater of Mérida, the mosque of Córdoba and the Alhambra of Granada, as well as several monasteries, cathedrals and palaces. Macael, still one of the main centers of production of white marble in the world, is the home of the Andalusian Technological Center of Stone (CTAP).

The blue and white colours recall the marble quarries, exploited in Macael since the 18th century.
