Presentation of Don Álvaro

The municipality of Don Álvaro (788 inhabitants in 2019; 3,210 ha; municipa website) is located 80 km east of Badajoz and 15 km south-east of Mérida.
Don Álvaro is named for Álvaro de Luna (1390-1453), Master of the Order of Saint James (1445-1452), who organized the re-settlement of the area near the St. Barnabas chapel, of Visigothic origin, and the St. Benedict chapel.
Don Álvaro was granted the status of"villa in 1593 by Philip II, separating from Mérida.

Flag of Don Álvaro

The flag and arms of Don Álvaro, adopted on 11 March 1997 by the Municipal Council and validated on 16 July 1997 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 5 November 1997 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 22 November 1997 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 136, pp. 8109-8110 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. White with the municipal coat of arms in full colors in the center and a blue triangle at hoist.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Vert three crosses sable, 2. Gules a moon reversed chequy or and sable. Grafted in base, Waves azure and argent. A bordure argent four Crosses of Saint James. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The crescent reversed chequy or and sable comes from the canting arms of the Luna (lit., "moon") lineage.
