The flag of Ingenio is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 30 December 2002 by the Government of the Canary Islands and published on 22 January 2003 in the official gazette of the Canary Islands, No. 14, p. 1,092 (text).
The flag was initially approved on 27 September 2001 by the Municipal Council, as published on 5 October 2001 in the official gazette of the Las Palmas Province, No. 120. On 30 January 2002, the Heraldry Commission of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands approved the description of the flag but asked the Municipal Council to drop the sketch of the flag attached to the description, which was accepted on 31 October 2002 by the Municipal Council.
The flag is described as follows:
Flag: Rectangular flag [...], whose length is 1.5 time bigger than the height, made of five horizontal stripes, from top to bottom: green, white, green, white, and green, the two uppermost and the two lowermost stripes of the same size, in height 1/8 of the flag's hoist, and the central stripe in height 1/2 of the flag's hoist.
When the flag is charged with the municipal coat of arms, it should be placed in the middle of the panel. The white colour represents the old regime of ownership of water of Ingenio, superseded by the Acequia Real de Aguatona (Aguatona Royal Irrigation Channel).
The green colour represents agriculture, field work, harvests, and, generally, all the elements of the land.
The colours of the flag repeat the principal colours of the municipal
coat of arms.
The flag seen on 7 September 2001 at the municipal bureau in Carrizal is charged with the municipal coat of arms in the middle.
The coat of arms of Ingenio is prescribed by Royal Decree No. 3,090 of 7 November 1977, published on 2 December 1977 in the Spanish official gazette.
The coat of arms is described as follows:
Coat of arms: Argent, a sugarcane mill sable on a base vert a cow argent powering it. The shield surmounted by an open crown.
According to José Manuel Erbez (Banderas y escudos de Canarias, 2007; website), the coat of arms in use shows the mill and the cow proper (orange brown), is supported by two brown lions rampant with an orange mean. Beneath the shield is a beige scroll inscribed with the motto "LEALTAD Y TRABAJO" (Loyalty and Labour).
The arms are canting, stressing the economic importance of sugar mills in the area. The sugar mills, called in Spanish ingenios
azucareros, are the municipality's namesake.
