Presentation of Agrón

The municipality of Agrón (374 inhabitants in 2007; 2,700 ha; municipal website) is located 30 km south-west of Granada.
The Moorish chronicles mention the village of Agrum, a name derived from Latin ager, "a field." However, this village, whose remains are known today as Old Agrón, was located a few kilometers from the modern Agrón, located on a small hill, and formed of c. 120 houses lined along a single street nearly forming a circle.

The flag and arms of Agrón, adopted on 31 March 2005 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 16 May 2005 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 30 May 2005 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 10 June 2005 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 112, p. 36 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3, made of two equal embattled vertical stripes, white at hoist and green with a white olive tree at fly.
Coat of arms: Shield divided per fess argent and vert and grafted in base. A tower countercoloured masoned sable, surrounded by two sheaves of wheat, the one one vert and the other argent, and of two olive trees, the one argent and the other vert. A base argent a pomegranate proper faceted gules slipped and leaved vert. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The tower represents the watching tower erected by the Moslims, dominating the village. Olives and wheat are the main source of income for the municipality. The pomegranate [granada] represents the Province of Granada.
