Presentation of Nevada

The municipality of Nevada (1,072 inhabitants in 2020; 7,731 ha) is located on the border with the province of Almería, 100 km south-east of Granada. The municipality was established as the merger of the former municipalities of Laroles (seat; 628 inh.), Mairena (209 inh.) and Picena (247 inh.), prescribed by Decree No. 2,048 issued on 13 July 1972 by the Spanish Government and published on 26 July 1972 in the Spanish official gazette, p. 13,416 (text).
The re-establishment of Picena as a separate municipality, validated on 12 April 1981 by the Municipal Council of Nevada, was turned down by Decree No. 290 issued on 27 September 1988 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 11 October 1988 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 79, p. 4,228 (text).

Symbols of Nevada

The flag of Nevada, adopted on 1 July 2021 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 21 July 2021 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, is prescribed by a Resolution issued on 1 September 2021 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 10 September 2021 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 175, p. 123 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Divided per bend sinister, 1. Crimson red, from the hoist's lower angle to the center of the panel's upper edge, 2. White, 3. Crimson red from the fly's upper angle to the center of the panel's lower edge. Charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms.

The coat of arms of Nevada, adopted on 11 April 1989 and 20 July 1992 by the Municipal Council, after validation on 30 March 1992 by the Royal Academy of History, is prescribed by Decree No. 47 issued on 20 April 1993 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 10 June 1993 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 61, pp. 5,089-5,090 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution issued on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The arms are described as follows:

Coat of arms: Quarterly, 1. Gules a crescent or, 2. Argent a monogram of Virgin Mary azure, 3. Argent a pomegranate vert open seeded gules, 4. Gules a spindle or in bend sinister. The shield surmounted by a Spanish Royal crown.

Red and white have been used by the municipality as its colors for ages, representing blood shed by Christians and Moors and peace resulting from the final victory, respectively. The crescent symbolizes Islam. The Marin monogram evokes the Virgin Mary as protector during the insurrection. The pomegranate recalls reincorporation to the Kingdom of Granada after the Morisco rebellion. The spindle represents cloth produced in the area in the Muslim period, a tradition lost long time ago but recorded in archives and literature.

The former flag of Nevada, in unofficial use, was diagonally divided per bend sinister red over white.
