The municipality of Vegas del Genil (8,068 inhabitants in 2008; 1,400 ha; municipal website) is located 10 km west of Granada. The municipality was established by Decree No. 243, adopted on 23 January 1976 by the Spanish Government and published on 17 February 1976 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 41, p. 3,312 (text), as the merger of the former municipalities of Ambroz, Belicena and Purchil. The administrative seat of the municipality is Purchil.
The area was settled successively by the Iberians, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians and the Romans, who founded here the estate (villa) of Bellicium (meaning "the place of the battle"). The other estates, of which no archeological remains have been found yet, were transformed in cortijadas and alquerías by the Moors. After the Christian reconquest, Belicena was resettled by Christian colonists while Ambroz and Purchil remained inhabited by Moriscos. After the expelling of the Moriscos in 1570, the three villages were resettled by colonists from Andalusia, Madrid and Zamora. The three modern villages emerged in the 18th century around the biggest estates.
