Presentation of Tórtola de Henares

The municipality of Tórtola de Henares ((1,012 inhabitants in 2018, 2,688 ha; municipal website) is located 15 km north of Guadalajara.

Tórtola de Henares was already settled in the prehistoric times, as evidence by the site of La Talayuela, located on the left bank of river Henares. The first permanent sttlement must have been established by the Celtiberians in Barranco de Valles, in the north-west of the village. Tórtola was known as Torela / Tortolla in the 12th century, referring to a tower (torre) of little significance.
Philip II sold Tórtola to the Duke of Pastrana. The village subsequently belonged to the Common of the Town and Land of Guadalajara until the 17th century. In the second half of the 17th century, the lord of Tórtola was Gaspar de Sandoval Silva Mendoza y de la Cerda, brother of the Duke of the Infantado and Pastrana, Gregorio María Sandoval Mendoza y de la Cerda. Together with the neighbouring town of Sacedón, Tórtola was in the 18th century part of the Duchy of the Infantado.
