Presentation of San Bartolomé de la Torre

The municipality of San Bartolomé de la Torre ((3,608 inhabitants in 2015; 5,661 ha; municipal website) is located 30 km north of Huelva.

San Bartolomé de la Torre was established in 1589, as part of the Marquisate of Gibraleón. The original charter is kept in the Municipal Archives of Gibraleón. The town is named for its patron saint, St. Bartholomew, and an old tower (torre), whose ruins still stand on a small hill (128 m asl) located c. 700 m from the downtown. Probably erected at the end of the 13th century during a period of troubles, the quadrangular, single-gated tower watched the Portuguese border and the roads connecting the mining areas to the coast.
