Flag of Lanzarote

The flag of Lanzarote is in proportions 2:3, divided red-blue per bend sinister. The coat of arms of the Island Council is in its centre. The height pf the coat of arms is c. 75% of the flag's height according to observations at the Island Council and on some Town Halls.
According to José Manuel Erbez (Banderas y escudos de Canarias, 2007; website), the flag was never approved officially. It is indeed the flag of the island's capital, Arrecife, where the municipal coat of arms is replaced by the coat of arms of the Island Council.
Most hotels on the island are using the flag without the coat of arms.

Coat of arms of Lanzarote

The coat of arms of Lanzarote is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 9 July 1964 by the Spanish Government and published on 29 July 1964 in the Spanish official gazette.
The coat of arms are "Gules two cauldrons or a bordure or 12 cauldrons or. The shield surmounted by a Marquis' coronet". The cauldrons are prescribed as "chequy or and sable" but are always represented or. The central cauldrons should be separated from the smaller ones by a thin yellow fimbriation, which is never used, therefore the prescribed bordure gules disappears.

According to José Manuel Erbez (Banderas y escudos de Canarias, 2007; website), the coat of arms belonged to the Herrera family, rulers of Lanzarote and La Gomera as well. Agustín de Herrera y Rojas, 3rd Lord of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, was named Count in 1567 and Marquis in 1584.

UD Lanzarote plays in the 3rd Spanish football league. The club's flag is similar to the flag of Lanzarote, but divided red-blue per bend and with the club's logo instead of the island's coat of arms.

The club's logo is made of a blue shield with 15 yellow cauldrons ordered in five rows of three cauldrons each. The centre is superimposed by a red rhomb with a brownish football in its centre flanked by two golden branches of laurel and the yellow capitals letters "U" (hoist) and "D" (fly). The shield has a red bordure with a yellow zig zag line and a thin white outer bordure that is broader at the top end containing there the black inscription "LANZAROTE". The shield has a yellow mantling. It is topped by a Marquis' coronet and below the shield in the red field is the yellow inscription "U.D.LANZAROTE".
