Presentation of Paradas

The municipality of Paradas (7,093 inhabitants in 2013, 10,943 ha; municipal website) is located 50 km south-east of Seville.

Paradas, located in a fertile plain, was already settled at the Roman time, as evidenced by the villae excavated in Cortijo de Paterna; mosaics showing quadriga races are now shown in the Seville Museum of Archeology.
Paradas was founded by a charter dated 1 February 1460, mentioning the Paradas tower, "inherited by Beatriz Ponce de León, the illegitimate daughter of Pedro Ponce de León, 4th Lord of Marchena, from her husband, Captain Alfonso Guillén de Villafranca, lord of Lopera". This was originally a grain farm owned by several successive owners, until acquired by Juan Ponce de León, the future Marquis of Cádiz, to found a new settlement. The tradition says the Paradas was settled by Christian colonists coming from Astorga (León), upon request of the 2nd Count of Arcos.
