The municipality of Santa Cruz del Retamar (2,946 inhabitants in 2018; 12,946 ha) is located 50 km north-west of Toledo and 20 km north of Torrijos.
Santa Cruz del Retamar was allegedly established in the middle of the 15th century by Gutierre de Cárdenas, Commander of León, and granted the status of villa in 1486.

Symbols of Santa Cruz del Retamar

The flag of Santa Cruz del Retamar (photo) is prescribed by an Order issued on 17 February 1998 by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha and published on 6 March 1998 in the official gazette of Castilla-La Mancha, No. 11 p. 1,752 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3, vertically divided in two equal parts, at hoist, red, and at fly, white, with the crowned coat of arms in the center.

The coat of arms of Santa Cruz del Retamar is prescribed by an Order issued on 18 July 1989 by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha and published on 26 July 1989 in the official gazette of Castilla-La Mancha, No. 32 p. 2,133 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Spanish shield. Per pale, 1. Argent a bush of broom vert surmounted by a Latin cross sable, 2a. Vert a castle or port and windows sable, 2b. Or two wolves in pale a bordure gules eight scallops or. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The Royal Academy of History validated "without any inconvenience" the proposed coat of arms, which highlights the historical importance of the castle of Retamar and the foundation of the village by Gutierre de Cárdenas.
The first quarter forms a rebus of the town's name, literally "The Bromm's Holy Cross".
