Prima Shipping Group of Porvoo

[Prima Shipping Group house flag]
image located by Jan Mertens, 18 May 2011

Prima Shipping Group of Porvoo, to the N.E. of Helsinki (Finland), founded in 1987, is a family owned business. Company website, in English: http://www.primas.fi
Named after the first vessel, or vice versa, Prima Shipping now operates six ships mainly active in Nordic waters, under the Finnish flag. Prima Chartering was established in 2008 to land tanker and dry cargo transport while Prima Logistics specialized in multimodal transport and projects is active in Russia and former Soviet countries as well. Other services offered are ship management and agencies; lastly, the newly acquired Port of Tolkkinen (between Helsinki and Porvoo) will ensure further expansion.

Image is taken from the company brochure. As is the case with the Grönkvist house flag, a blue field with a white diamond touching the flag’s edges bears a blue initial, this time an italic serifless "G" as appears on the website.

Lepsama - per hoist diagonal white over red; over all "S&H". (I guess Lepsama is a typo for Lepsala)

Silja Line

[Silja Line]

A consortium of Finska Angfartygs A/B, Rederi A/B Bore and Rederi A/B Svea. According to Lloyds Silja Line O/Y was formed in 1957 and appears in the early days as Siljavarustamo-A/B Siljarederiet O/Y and then Siljavarustamo-A/B Siljarederiet O/Y. From the cap badges in the Collectors Corner site it seems that the early flag was of conventional mode of white and a very broad blue horizontal band bearing a white cross throughout in turn surmounted by an undefined white circle charged with a blue "S"

From Brown 1995 [4] showing the, what I take is, seal head but as a black outline on white and facing the hoist which fits in with the funnel markings. A possibility for Al's flag, failing an actual sighting to disprove it, is that it is likely to be for use as a shore flag only, it being a common ploy for those with names on them to be so used.

Jarig Bakker, 7 July 2004

Jarig’s source design, at least in this case, must have been rather sketchy - no blame!
One step nearer the real thing is a table flag once offered on eBay (which country? not noted) under no. 260539543514 (end 24 Jan 2010) put up by "miletesfrank09", dimensions given as 14.5 cm x 21.5 cm. As shown on this image, the initials and the stripe are rather fat and the blue is of a different hue. (Photo was reduced.)

Vasa-Umeå AB

On vasabatarna.se (closer image here) you can see a flag of the historical Finnish shipping company Vasa-Umeå AB, which used to operate ships going between Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden (also Vaasa-Sundsvall and Pori-Sundsvall).

Viking Line

White over red flag; in center white diamond fimbriated black; concentric yellow diamond with black "v" in bottom.
Jarig Bakker, 13 August 2005

The Viking Line ABP is Finnish being based in Mariehamn with the ancestry going back to Rederi Vikinglinjen A/B which commenced operations in 1959 under Gunnar Eklund. In 1963 Eklund and others formed Ålandsfärjan A/B which became SF Line A/B and then Viking Line ABP. There has been a Swedish connection in the ownership which was originally a consortium with during the years various comings and goings of participants which makes for difficulties in domiciling the livery which was common to the service with participating vessels registered in various countries. Currently, from what I can make out, the company is now wholly Finnish although the vessels are registered in both Finland and Sweden.
