Presentation of Peyruis

The village of Peyruis (2,259 inhabitants, 2,323 ha) is located in Upper-Provence in the middle valley of the river Durance (right bank), 30 km north of Manosque and 10 km south of Château-Arnoux. It is part the Communauté de communes de la moyenne Durance.

Peyruis is built on a hillock dominating the Durance, which seems to have been settled since the early ages. The local tradition says that a battle took place there during the Roman times, but the first written trace of Peyruis, as Petroxium, dates back to 1068. This name is said to recall Consul Petronius, killed during the battle. Anyway, the valley of Durance was followed by the Via Domitia, which linked Italy to Spain and was marked out in the early Christian times with oratories; it was a main way of pilgrimage to Santiago.
In the Middle Ages, the domain of Peyruis, constituting with the neighbouring villages of Augès and Piousin a Barony, belonged successively to the families Forgin and Pilles. Until the French Revolution, the castle of Peyruis (now ruined) watched the valley of Durance and was of strategic importance.
Peyruis is mostly an agricultural village, producing stone fruits, olives, nougat, wine and honey. Like any nice Provencal village, Peyruis has beautiful old houses (XVIth-XVIIth centuries), six old fountains delivering drinkable water and a square planted with plane trees where people play pétanque.

Flag of Peyruis

The municipal flag of Peyruis, as seen there by Dominique Cureau, is yellow with the municipal coat of arms in the middle.
The municipal coat of arms of Peyruis is (GASO):
D'azur aux trois étoiles d'or, au chef d'argent chargé des lettres PPP capitales de sable.
In English (Brian Timms): Azure three mullets or a chief argent the capital letters PPP in fess sable.
The arms were granted by the Marquis de Pilles in the XVIIIth century. The letters PPP are said to mean Peyruis Pauvre Pays (the poor land of Peyruis).
