The municipality of Gisors (11,696 inhabitants in 2019; 1,667 ha) is located 60 km north-west of Évreux.
Gisors' early town was dominated by the fortress built in 1097 at the request of
king of England William the Red, son of William the Conqueror, and
reinforced by Henry II Plantagenet in the 12th century. Its strategic
position on the border of Normandy caused it to be strongly contested
during the 12th century.
In 1193, when Richard I, king of England, was held a prisoner in Germany on
his return from a Crusade, Philip II Augustus seized the stronghold.
Richard almost retook it after a memorable battle four years later.
Surrounded by walls with 12 towers, the castle has a central keep inside a
large courtyard.
