The new municipality of Audierne (3,684 inhabitants in 2016; 1,837 ha) was established on 1 January 2016 as the merger of the former municipalities of Audierne (2,159 inh.; 295 ha) and Esquibien (1,593 inh.; 1,542 ha).

Audierne is a located on the south-western coast of the Finistère, which is constituted by the Bay of Audierne, stretching out from Pointe du Raz (North) to Pointe de Penmarch (South). The city was built on the estuary of river Goyen (Breton, Gwaien), which probably gave its name to the town.
Audierne is a small sea resort and an important fishing port. The main specialities of Audierne fishers are lobster, rock lobster, and spider crab.

The flag of Audierne is white with the municipal coat of arms placed in the centre of the flag and surmounted by the name of the municipality written in black capital letters.
The coat of arms of Audierne highlights the main activity of the city, fishing. The two red animals are most probably lobsters, which are among the most prized Crustaceans. The chief of the blazon has a semy of ermine spots representing Brittany.
