The municipality of Vianne (1,035 inhabitants in 2014; 982 ha), formerly known as Vilalonga / Villelongue, was founded as a bastide (fortified town) by Jourdain de l'Isle, who named it for his wife, Viana de Gontaud-Biron. A good part of the walls are still visible.
François Jean-Blanc, 8 October 2014
The flag of Vianne, flown on the town wall, is a banner of the municipal arms, "Quarterly, 1. and 4. Quarterly or and gules, 2. Gules three leopards or in pale, 3. Gules a cross of Toulouse or".
The yellow and red chequy quarters represent the arms of the Gontaud family. The town of Gontaud-de-Nogaret use these arms. The two other quarters represent the powers that faught for the control of the town, Languedoc (the cross) and England. The coat of arms and the derived banner of arms seem to be recent, due to the use of the arms of England instead ofthose of Guyenne ("Gules a leopard or"), which was the real power.
