The municipality of Forbach (21,652 inhabitants in 2018; 1,632 ha) is located on the German border, forming a single conurbation with Saarbrücken.
Forbach was before the Schengen Agreement a major border crossing both for road and rail transport and travel. Located in the Saar-Warndt coal mining basin, which extends into eastern Moselle, Forbach was an important mining town, with offices of the
Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine. Mining operations were definitively shut down in 2004.
The fortified castle of Forbach was built on the Schlossberg hill at the end of the
12th century. It was gradually enlarged and, around 1550, linked to the city
by a surrounding wall. The Schlossberg tower was rebuilt in 1891.

The flag of Forbach (photo) is white with the lion from the municipal coat of arms and "FORBACH" in golden letters above.
The municipal arms of Forbach, "Argent a lion sable armed and
langued gules", were the arms of the lords of Forbach in the 13th century.
