The Mediterranean coast of Roussillon between Argelès-Plage and the border with Spain (35 km) was nicknamed Côte Vermeille in the XIXth century. The rocks of the coast have a pink reddish shade at sunrise and sundown, similar to the shade called in French vermeil. The main ports of the coast are, from north to south, Collioure, Port-Vendres, Banyuls and Cerbère.
Port-Vendres is the old Portus Veneris (Venus' Port), built at the
end of a cove and fortified by Vauban at the end of the XVIIth century.
Port-Vendres is today the main fishing port in Roussillon.
Société Nautique de la Côte Vermeille, based in Port-Vendres, was founded in 1932. Its burgee is blue with a white star fimbriated at hoist and a
"Catalan" diamond at fly.
