The municipality of Morzine (2,948 inhabitants in 1999; 441 ha) is established on the confluence of six torrents, which merge to form river Dranse. Morzine remained a relatively isolated mountain village, whose main activities were mountain pasturage and slate extraction.
In the 1930s, the hotel-keeper Francois Baud transformed the village
into a summer and winter mountain resort. Morzine became rapidly the
main center of tourism in the Upper-Chablais.
Morzine gained world fame in 1960 when the skier Jean Vuarnet won the downhill in the Winter Olympics Game held at Squaw Valley. One of the first skiers to use metal skis, Vuarnet and invented the legendary "egg position". Subsequently, Vuarnet was one of the founders of the ski resort of Avoriaz, located on the territory of Morzine, which increased the ski domain of Morzine up to 2,500 m in elevation.
