The municipality of Le Vésinet (16,339 inhabitants - Vésigondins - in 2008; 500 ha) is located west of Paris..
The French composer and organist Jehan Alain (1911-1940), born in
Saint-Germain-en-Laye, close to Le Vésinet, hold the organ in
one of the churches of Le Vésinet. Since his death in the
beginning of the Second World War, his sister Marie-Claire (b. 1926) has not stopped editing, promoting and playing her brother's works, which are
among the most original organ works of the 20th century. Marie-Claire
Alain is also noted for her interpretations of French
organ music (Saint-Saëns' Symphony with Organ and
Poulenc's Concerto for Organ, Timpani, and String Orchestra).
The philosoph Alain (a.k.a. Emile Chartier, 1868-1951), not
related to the organist, lived in Le Vésinet from 1917 to his death.
Alain's philosophy, easy to read and understand but not simplistic,
is a pleasant mix of Cartesian humanism and Socratic irreverence.
