ANZAC Day flag, 2020 - Image by Olivier Touzeau, 5 July 2020

The Communauté de communes du Val de Somme (26,476 inhabitants in 2016; 24,640 ha) is composed of 33 communes, Villers-Bretonneux included.

The Australian troops stopped the advance of the German army on 24-27 April 1918 during the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux. Commanded by General Monash, the Australian troops also participated in the Battle of Amiens from 8 to 15 August 1918.
The Villers-Bretonneux Australian national memorial was inaugurated in 1938 by King George VI and French President Albert Lebrun. The ANZAC Day remembrance ceremony, organized for the first time on 25 April 1998, attracts nearly 4,000 people each year.

Anzac Day 2020 ceremonies had to be cancelled because of the coronavirus lockdown. The Communauté de communes du Val de Somme proposed to the territory's town halls and inhabitants to decorate buildings and houses in April so as not to forget the sacrifice of thousands of Australians during the Great War.
The flag designed for this purpose (photo) is made of three rows and three columns, gathering from hoist to fly 1. the flags of France, Canada, and Germany, 2. the flag of Australia, the tourism logo of Val de Somme on a white field, and the flag of New Zealand, and 3. the flags of Belgium, USA, and United Kingdom.
