The municipality of Six-Fours-les-Plages (34,592 inhabitants in 2019, therefore the 7th most populated municipality in the department of Var; 2,658 ha) is located 15 km west of Toulon. The municipl territory includes the Embiez islands, site of an oceanographic research centre.
Six-Fours-les-Plages is overlooked by a fort built at the end of the 19th century. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, the Navy acquired the old fortified
village of Six-Fours, expropriated the last inhabitants, suppressed the
houses, the church and the castle. The construction of the fort began in 1875. In 1943-1944, the fort was armed with 4 88 mm guns held by the 355 Flak-Abteilung of the Wehrmacht. The fort capitulated on August 26, the spahis platoon capturing 490 prisoners. Today, the
fort is used by the communications service of the French Navy.
Initially a simple hamlet located on the hill of the fort and surrounded by
an imposing wall made up of several towers (hence its name), the town
experienced a demographic boom in the 1960s as tourism developed and
subsequent urbanization. Today Six-Fours-les-Plages is both a residential
suburb of Toulon and a seaside resort appreciated for its natural heritage.
