The municipality of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez (11,179 inhabitants in 2018; 4,883 ha) is located on the Atlantic coast.
Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez is named for the former island of Rié.
The assassination of King Henry IV in 1610 and the Regency exerted by Marie de Medici' cvaused the re-emergence of violence between Catholics and Protestants. Between 1620 and 1622, three military expeditions were ordered by Louis XIII to restore order; the battle of Rié was fought in April 1622.
During Cent-Jours, Louis de la Rochejaquelein led an uprising against the restored Empire. For nearly two weeks, the insurgents fought from Aizenay to Saint-Jean-de-Monts, but quickly, strategic and command disagreements weakened La Rochejaquelein. Abandoned, he was killed by Bonapartist troops on 4 June 1815 in Les Mathes, a hamlet of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, while heading to Saint-Jean-de-Monts for a landing of weapons.

The flag of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez (photo) is in proportions 3:5, featuring the municipal logo, which was created in 2006 by the Peuplades agency, on a white ovoid field, surrounded in the upper part by four vertical stripes of different width and shadex, and in the lower part by a light blue sea with two sails taken from the logo.
