Red Star (official website) was created in 1897 in the borough of Gros Caillou, in the
fairly conservative 7th arrondissement of Paris, by Charles de Saint-Cyr, Jean de Pressac and Jules Rimet (the founder of the Football World Cup). The name of the club was coined by Miss Jenny, the British governess of a club's member, as a reference to the shipping company Red Star Line. This name has nothing to do with the Communist red star, as opposed to the Red Star of Belgrade, for instance.
In 1932, the club merged with Olympique de Paris and adopted the green colours for their jerseys, dropping their own vertcially striped Navy blue and white jerseys.
Until 1946, the club played in Saint-Ouen but remained officially located in Paris. In 1946, it was transferred to Saint-Ouen and absorbed the smaller clubs of the town. Red Star is one of the only French football clubs whose name is always used without appending the name of the town.
Once one of the most famous French football clubs, Red Star maintained a professional team from 1932 to 2001 and won the French Cup five times between 1921 and 1942.
Bankrupted in 2002, the club was relegated the next year in Division d'Honneur, the 6th national division. Back in 2011 to the National Championship (3rd division), Red Star joined back the Second League for the season 2015-2016, 16 years after their last presence at this level.
