The Fédération Française de Natation (FFN - French Swimming Federation; website) was established on 20 November 1920, as the Fédération Française de Natation et de Sauvetage, long after the initiation of sport swimming in France: the first dedicated club, Société des nageurs du Havre, was founded in 1873, the first swimming competition on river Seine was organized in 1887 during the Paris International Exhibition, and the first national championship was organized in 1902.
The first French Olympic title in swimming was claimed in 1900 in Paris by Charles Devendeville (60 m underwater swimming, a one-time event in the Olympic Games). Accordingly, the genuine first French Olympic champion in swimming is Jean Batteux, gold medalist in Helsinki in 1952 (400 m freestyle). The French Olympic record, as of 2016, is 8 gold medals, 15 silver medals, and 15 bronze medals.
The FFN governs swimming, open water swimming, artistic swimming, diving and water polo.
