Newt

Newt - Flag designed by Laurent Duthion, 2017

Laurent Duthion designed Newt, an alternative flag for Université de Rennes I, based on the courtship color pattern of a male alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris (Laurenti, 1768))). This is a tribute to the newt used as its emblem by the university for decades.
The flag was hoisted on the Beaulieu Campus of the university on 22 June 2017, during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Institut universitaire de technologie.

The design is most probably a reference to Alan Turing's seminal paper on morphogenetic self-organization (A. Turing. 1952. The chemical basis of morphogenesis. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Series B, Biological Sciences 237, 37-72) and the application of Turing's theory to the pigment patters of Felidae (R.T. Lui, Liaw, S.S., P.K. Maini. 2006. Two-stage Turing model for generating pigment patterns on the leopard and the jaguar. Physical Review E 74, 011914).

L'invention de la réalité - Flags designed by Laurent Duthion, 2013

The installation L'invention de la réalité was presented in 2013 is the castle of Oiron (Poitou), a 16th century castle housing the "Curios & Mirabilia" collection of contemporary art.
The installation is composed of three flags designed on the same principle. A computer program transformed in more than 300 horizontal lines the 987 answers to the question "Which color does the word 'Reality' evoke to you?". The process was repeated with the words "Invention" and "Image".
