The Compagnie Générale Transméditerranéenne (Transmed) was founded in March 1969 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of
the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. Most of the fleet of the company came from the Compagnie de Navigation Mixte, absorbed by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique in 1967.
The Transmed operated a cargo and passenger service to Corsica (by state
contract) and to Algeria and Tunisia (in agreement with their respective government).
In spring 1976, the Transmed was succeeded by the newly created SNCM; the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique was merged in 1977 with the Messageries Maritimes to form the Compagnie Générale Maritime (CGM).

P. Bois [boi03] shows the house flag of the Transmed as white with a red disk in upper hoist and the writing "Cie Gle / TRANSMEDITERRANEENNE" in red. The flag is directly derived from the house flag of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique.
