Joseph Bouteiller was a shipowner from Saint-Servan, therefore, most probably, involved in the "grand fishing" on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.

Bouteiller's house flag is shown in the Yearbook of the Central Committee of France Shipowners (1922) as white with a red border and a big red star at hoist, flanked on its right by two smaller red stars placed side by side.
