STEF (website) is the French and European leader in logistics and transportation of fresh and frozen food products ("under temperature ranging from -25 °C to 15 °C).
Société de Transports et d'Entreposage Frigorifique (Company of Temperature-Controlled Transportation and Storage) was founded in 1920; it was subsequently a wholly-owned subsidiary of SNCF, the French national railway company. Transports Frigorifiques Européens (TFE - European Temperature-Controlled Transportation) was founded in 1964. The two companies eventually merged as a wholly-owned subsidiary of then state-owned CGM (Compagnie Générale Maritime). Privatized in 1993, the group was acquired by its employees and renamed STEF-TFE in 1996. The group's original name, STEF, was re-established on 1 January 2012; the change, decided by the board of directors in September 2011, was approved by the shareholders during the extraordinary general assembly of the group hold on 23 December 2011.
STEF, headquartered in Paris, is divided into six branches operating
in eight European countries:
- STEF Logistique (formerly, STEF): optimization of the food supply
chain under controlled temperature;
- STEF Transport (founded in 1964 as TFE [Transports Frigorifiques
Européens]: transportation and freight management for fresh and frozen goods;
- STEF Seafood (founded in 1974 as Tradimar): seafood transport and
logistics;
- STEF Iberia, headquartered in Torrejon de Ardoz (Madrid): logistics
for the the food temperature-controlled supply chain;
- STEF Italia (formerly Cavalieri, acquired in 2005), headquartered in
San Prospero (Parma): transportation platform in Milan for grouped
deliveries to France and Europe;
- STEF Information et Technologies (founded in 1999): management of
physical and information flows;
STEF acquired in 1992 the CMN (Compagnie Méridionale de Navigation)
shipping company.
In 2012, STEF employed 14,500 workers, achieving a consolidated
turnover of 2,500 millions € and a net profit of 55.5 millions €.

The flag of STEF is white with the group's emblem in the middle,
without lettering. The flag is often hoisted on the group's platforms
(at least in France).
To "favour the corporate approach with customers", the group decided
to adopt a single visual identity for all its operations - at the same
time the original name of STEF was re-established -, made of the
"historical blue emblem of the group" (lettering identifying the
different branches was removed and replaced by "STEF") (L'Officiel des Transporteurs, 6 January 2012).
The emblem of STEF is made of two interlaced blue rings, sky blue and
sea blue, respectively. The blue colour is usually associated to cold
and low temperatures.
