The civil war which broke out in Spain in 1936 divided the country and
caused unexpected ressuplying problems in the western Mediterranean
basin. After most established shipowners had withdrawn from the risky Spanish trade, several small businessmen acted as
shipowners to fill the empty space. In Marseilles, a group of businessmen of Greek origin, led by Cottaropoulos, were among the most successful of these newcomers.
Panagyotis Cottaropoulos and his associate Theophylatis bought in 1936
the cargo ship MS Prado, which they operated under their two names. In 1938, they bought MS Calvados and MS El-Djem, founding the Société Européenne d'Armement.
After the Second World War, Cottaropoulos created with his new
associate, P. Canallas, the Société Franco-Tunisienne d'Armement. The company operated a fleet of small second-hand cargo ships, which were often damaged and had to remain on-shore because of the lack of cash.
Cottaropoulos attempted to found a new company, the Compagnie
Européene de Navigation, which was no more profitable than the others, and went out of business in 1972.
