The Tandonnet company was founded in 1796 by Jean-Baptiste (1769-1847) and Arnaud (1772-1855) Tandonnet, sons of Arnaud Tandonnet, a merchant from Civac, near Bordeaux. They were succeeded by Jean-Baptiste's sons, Jean-Hyppolite (1807-1887) and Victor (1815-1843), themselves succeeded by Jean-Hyppolite's sons, Jean-Paul (1839-1911) and Maurice (1844-1906).
In 1911, the last Tandonnet ships were merged by the shipowner Ballande, also from Bordeaux, with Voiliers de Nouméa to form Compagnie Navale et Commerciale de l'Océanie (CNCO).

According to James Griffin (Flags national and mercantile, 1891), the house flag of Tandonnet is white with a blue border and the black initials "J.H.T.F." (serifed).
