From http://tireeflag.com/:

The selection panel running the Tiree Flag Competition has chosen four finalists to face the public vote.

It had a difficult job. There were 261 entries to the competition from as far afield as Switzerland and Canada, ranging from simple crayon sketches to sophisticated computer-generated images. Many entries used the Nordic cross that has been adopted by Barra and South Uist, but employing different colours. Stripes of one form or another, representing the colours of the sand, sea and machair were another popular choice. Other designers used waves, the sun and representations of the wind to convey the essence of Tiree.

The panel of eight making the selection had been set up by Tiree’s community council, and consisted of the Lord Lyon from Edinburgh, Scotland’s flag authority; Philip Tibbetts from the Flag Institute in London, who has helped to get recognition for new flags in Barra and Caithness; Dr John Holliday; Ian Gillies; Lachie Brown; Iain MacKinnon, Hillcrest; Donna MacLean and Annine MacLean. Philip Tibbetts then worked on the finalists’ designs to bring them into line with heraldic convention.

We hope to have the finalists’ flags made and flying side-by-side at the Agricultural Show in Crossapol on Friday 20 July, where those on the showground itself can cast a vote. There will also be voting slips in the island’s newspaper, An Tirisdeach, in the issue following the Show, and online voting through SurveyMonkey, which will remain open for two weeks after 20 July. We will announce the winner on Monday 13 August.
