The Dumpy Book of Ships and the Sea (1957)
shows the burgee blue with a white cross that tapers to a point at the fly. In
the centre is gold fish surmounted by a crown.
James Dignan, 12 February 2008
The club has not existed since 1961. The club was founded in 1890, and
headquartered in Plymouth (i.e., the South West of England). Relatively early
on in its life, the Club was granted both (1) an Admiralty warrant for a
defaced Blue Ensign (i.e., a Royal Crown surmounting a yellow fish, all in the
lower fly), and (2) the Royal style. I cannot give you the precise date on
either of these events, but I can tell you that the 1902-03 Lloyds Register of
Yachts shows both the ensign and identifies the club as Royal.
In 1961,
the Royal South Western Yacht Club was amalgamated with the Royal Western Yacht Club of England (also
headquartered in Plymouth), which is the club that continues today, using the
plain Blue Ensign. (Source: R Western YC club website). Hence, the defaced Blue
Ensign for the Royal South Western YC has been obsolete since 1961.
