The municipality of Saint-Georges (locally, Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock; 4,188 inhabitants in 2018; 232,000 ha) is located 200 km south-east of Cayenne on the left bank of river Oyapock, here the border with Brazil.
Several short-lived colonies were founded on river Oyapock. In 1606, Oyapoc,
founded two years before by the Brit Charles Leigh was abandoned after a mutiny. The colony re-founded in 1620 by Roger North had to be abandoned in 1629.
In February 1677, John Apricius founded a Dutch colony, protected by Fort Orange. Attacked four months later by the French, the colonists were repatriated to the Netherlands. Fort Saint-Louis was constructed by the French jn 1723/1724, at or near the Dutch fort. The Jesuit mission established in 1734 near the fort was attacked in 1744 by the Brits and abandoned.
The town of Saint-Georges was founded on 23 April 1853 as a penal colony named after a
Dutch coin featuring St. George that was discovered at the site. The camp was
closed down in 1863. The discovery of gold in 1885 in the Camopi River
revived the hamlet and the town was officially created in 1947.
Saint-Georges is one of the main Palikur settlement. About
500 Palikur live in neighbourhoods built specifically for them in the main town and in the village of Trois-Palétuviers.
