Former flag andarms of Nova Bukovica (reconstruction) - Images by Željko Heimer, 17 August 2016
The first symbols of Nova Bukovica were prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Nova Bukovica, adopted on 12 Decmber 1998 by the Municipality Council and published in Službeni glasnik Opčine Nova Bukovica, No. 4.
The flag is described in Article 11 of the Decision, as follows:
The flag of the municipality of Nova Bukovica is rectangular in shape in proportions 1:2 and it is coloured blue. In the centre of the flag is set the coat of arms of the municipality of Nova Bukovica.
The coat of arms is described in Article 9 of the Decision, as follows:
The coat of arms of the municipality of Nova Bukovica is made after the historical pattern of the coat of arms of the parish of Nova Bukovica from the first half of the 19th century. The coat of arms of the municipality of Nova Bukovica is rectangular in shape, in proportions 6:7, with its central frame ending in a point. The coat of arms is coloured yellow and quartered by a central, white cross. In the top left and the bottom right fields is a twoer coloured red with a base in green colour. In the top right and the bottom left fields is a green birch leaf with a green base beneath it. The red tower symbolizes the historical continuity and defensive character of Nova Bukovica in history.
The process of adoption of municipal symbols was initiated by Decision Odluka o pokretanju postupka za izradu općinskog grba i zastave, adopted on 19 September 1996 and commissioning Dr. Ivan Balta, "an
expert in heraldry" to draft proposals.
Ivan Balta held a public lecture in Nova Bukovica presenting his design to citizens. The flag is blue, symbolizing unity and concord. The coat of arms, based on parish seal of Nova Bukovica dated 1812, is quartered in "pontifical yellow", including two red towers to symbolize defense and birch (Croatian, bukva) leaves to symbolize the place name. The five "points" (embattlements?) of the towers stand for the five points of a nobility coronet and, thus, for the local nobility.
[Simbolika blagostanja i slobode, Virovitički list, 29 November 1996]
the Municipality Assembly adopted some amendments to the
coat of arms and the flags: "There shall be some minor changes since the best solutions were sought, but the symbols will be put in use on the Municipality Day."
[Izabrano Poglavarstvo, Virovitički list, 18 July 1997]
The amended symbols were not unveiled and the "minor changes" were
not published in any gazette or elsewhere.
