The municipality of Pitomača (10,465 inhabitants in 2001, 5,712 in the town of Pitomača) is located at the north-western border of Slavonia, in Podravina region.
The village was formed in 1685 after the liberation of the region from the Turks.

The symbols of Pitomača are described in Article 5 of the consolidated Municipality Statutes Statut Opčine Pitomača, adopted in 2006 by the Municipality Assembly.
The symbols were approved by the Ministry of Administration on 13 July 1995.
The competition for the design of symbols of Pitomača was initiated by a Decision adopted on 30 November 1994 by the Municipality Assembly. Prizes were set to 5000, 3000 and 1000 kuna (the
first figure amounted to some 700 euros, being about two, two and a half
times the average net monthly salary in Croatia at the time) (Natječaj, Virovitićki list, 27 January 1995).
The symbols were adopted on 2 May 1995 by the Municipality Assembly. The symbols were designed by željko Moslavac, an engineer from
Virovitica, also the co-author of the symbols of Ferdinandovac, selected among eight proposals. The author explains that the white stripe represents river Drava in the north while the red hill represents the Bilogora mountains in the south; the green field represents the fertile Pitomača plateau, located inbetween (Usvojeno općinsko znakovlje, Virovitićki list, 5 May 1995).
The symbols were consecrated on 15 June 1995 (St. Vitus Day) by the parish priest, Stjepan Deskar (Naj domaja spi, Glas Podravine, 23 June 1995; Uspješan razvoj lokalne samouprave, Virovitićki list, 23 June 1995).
The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.
