Jugolinija was established in 1947 in Rijeka with 18 ships, reaching 57 ships and over 3000 employees in 1986. In 1949, it merged with Jugoslavenska slobodna plovidba. In the 1950s, over two dozen ships were split to the newly formed companies Splošna plovba, Jugotanker, Atlantska, Jugooceanija.
The house flag of Jugolinija, as shown by Josef Nuesse and by Isaić [isa01], is blue with a white lozenge charged with a red five-pointed star in the middle.

Brown's 5th edition [wed51] shows a red flag with a white diamond throughout bearing a red star, indeed the flag of Jugoslavenska slobodna plovidba. Brown has compounded the error by showing the blue flag version of Jugoslavenska Linijska under the heading of Jugoslavenska slobodna.

The State-owned company Jugoslavenska slobodna plovidba was established in 1947 in Sušak (Rijeka) with 14 ships; it merged with Jugolinija in 1949. Another company of the same name, established in 1961 in Ploče (Kardeljevo) with 3 ships, merged with Šibenska plovidba in 1963.
The flag of Jugoslavenska slobodna plovidba, as shown by Loughran, 1995 [lgr95], is red with white lozenge throughout containing a red five-pointed star.
