Overview

Lajtabánság was a short lived Hungarian "state" in the territory of nowadays Burgenland after the Treaty of Trianon aftre the Hungarian Army left the territory but before the Austrian annexation. The "state" lived between 4 October 1921 - 5 November 1921.

This would be maybe called in English the Bannate (or even Palatinate) of Laita. Laita is betetr known otherwise as the river that borders between (simply said) Austrian and Hungarian crown lands, Cilaitania and Translaitania.
BTW, what's the thing captioned "A Lajtabansagi Csendorseg jelzese" - it's a kind of a police insignia. Does the writing on it suggest that the German name of Lajtabansag was already Burgenland?
Željko Heimer, 10 June 2002

Concering Željko's question - as far as I know, the answer is no.
István Molnár, 17 June 2002

I made some reconstruction of the symbols of the Lajtabánság: one variant in which whole coat of arms is on white stripe and second variant with shield is on white. The reconstructions are based on the "Constitution of the Lajtabánság" and the 1st Decree of the Governing Council
According to the Constitution of the Lajtabánság (translated from the Official Journal of the Lajtabánság; Felsoor 1921. October 20):
"In the Obedience of my Comission and Mandate given by the Conventional Assembly:
I.   While the Definitive Formation of the Governing Council will be formed I order to attend to the pending matters:
President of the Governing Council: captain László Apáthy
Official in in charge of the Foreign Relations:  lieutenant dr. Ferenc Lévay
Official in in charge of the Ecclesiastical Matters:  temporarily captain László Apáthy
Official in in charge of the Home Affairs:  captain Béla Bárdoss
Official in in charge of Justice: temporarily lieutenant dr. Ferenc Lévay
Official in in charge of Economy: lieutenant György Hir
Until further notice I assume the direction of affairs of the National Defense
I expect the suggestions for the attending to the pending matters from the Governing Council.
II.   On the grounds of the suggestion of the Governing Council I condescent the Constituion:
1. § The official name of the state: LAJTABÁNSÁG.
2.§ The Coat of Arms of the State: Pointed shield, in the red field there is a white patriarchal cross, on the shield there is a winged TURUL on the bill of the turul is a sword. Below the shiled there is a laurel-oak opened girdle. The national colours are: red-white-green.
3.§ The head of the state is the Bán (Palatine) elected by the Conventional Assembly.
(...)
6.§ The official language of the state: Hungarian. All acts and resolutions is issued in Hungarian, German and Croatian language.
(...)
Felsoor, 1921. October 4.
Pál Prónay
supreme commander

According to decree of the Governing Council (translated from Official Journal of the Lajtabánság; Felsoor 1921. October 20):
1st Decree
The Governing Council of the Lajtabánság - based on the 4th § of the Constitution, temporarly while the proposed act will take effect - decree:
1st Chapter - The borders of the state   (...)
2nd Chapter - Using the State Coat of Arms:   The state Coat of Arms with the circumscription LAJTABÁNSÁG is the official seal of the state. On the public holidays the national flag with the Coat of Arms is had to use on all official buldings.
 (...)
Felsoor, 1921 October 20.
László Apáthy
President of the Governing Council

Official language of the state is Hungarian but the inhabitants of the territory without Sopron and vicinity: German (70-75%), Croats (15-20%), Hungarian (5-10%). The borders of the state: In North and west the original Hungarian-Austrian border, in east and south the new treaty line between Austria and Hungary. The state had got only one act, one resolution, one edition of the off. journal and one edition of the political-cultural newspaper. Felsoor now is Oberwart town in Burgenland with German-Hungarian inhabitants - one of the four Hungarian inhabited settlements in Burgenland.
