Craughwell, Co. Galway: An Important Parnellite painted cloth Banner c. 1885,
with portrait of Michael Davitt in an oval centre piece surrounded by national
emblems, harp, wolfhound, & provincial coat of arms., with the words 'Craughwell
in the Vanguard' words of verse from 'The West's Awake' on reverse, "....Let
Landlords Quake We'll Watch Till Death For Erin's Sake." with a rising sun, a
Stars-and-Stripes flag design and the words 'God Save Ireland.' Mounted on a
horizontal pole, with looped decorated supports, label of W. O'Grady, Dublin, on
reverse. Ref: G.A. Hayes-McCoy {pps. 175-177}.
The banner is on both sides
emerald green, and it has a gilt fringe, portrait with some wear, but a rare and
interesting survival from the Land League period, approx. 1.6 meters x 1.1
meters (5ft x 3 ft). The Irish National League was founded under the Presidency
of C.S. Parnell in October 1882. The Land League of 1879, which preceded it, was
suppressed following the issue of the "No Rent" manifesto in October 1881,
shortly after Parnell was imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol.
