The Ministry of Defense's Research and Development Unit was established in
July 1972 as a merger between the IDF Department of
Weapons and Powers from the Chief Scientist in the Ministry of Defense. In
November 1982, the unit was
reorganized and renamed Director of Research and
Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure, colloquially known as
מפא"ת (English: Mafaat) (or Maf'at).
