The fleur-de-lys ("giglio") is the symbol of the city since its foundation (ca. 1000), maybe to establish a connection with its Roman name, FLORENTIA. In 1251 the Ghibellins, former rulers in exile, have united under this ensign.

Flag According to Book of all Kingdoms (late 14th Cent.)

image by Eugene Ipavec, 26 January 2010

The 28th flag mentioned and illustrated in the Book of All Kingdoms [e9s50] is attributed to Florence. This as depicted in the 2005 spanish illustrated transcription [e9s05], a white flag with a red cross throughout, shown in the ogival default shape of this source. (Identical to the 3rd flag of it: Bayonne).
The anonymous author of [e9s50] describes the flag thusly: "El señor d’ella á por señales un pendón blanco con una cruz bermeja atal" (Its lord has for sign a white pendon with a red cross like this).
