Historical flags

1872-1885

[1872-1885 JRCS flag]
by Zachary Harden, 30 September 2018

This symbol was adopted by the forerunners of the JRCS as an Army hospital flag. In theory, if Japan did adhere to the Geneva Convention, these flags and other markings can be modified to add one vertical red arm without much effort or expense. Yet, due to confusion with Christianity and other considerations, this was selected by the head of the newly established army medical hospital system. (Source)

Hakuai Sha 1877-1887

[Hakuai Sha flag]
by Zachary Harden, 30 September 2018

The Hakuai Sha (Japan Philanthropy Corporation) was established in 1877 by Tsunetami Sano. Because Japan didn't adhere to International Red Cross in 1877 the flag was used for 10 years until 1887, when Japan joined the International Red Cross.
Jaume Ollé 26 August 2000

The flag used by the Hakuai Sha was a combination of an army hospital flag and the national flag; not only was Japan was not part of the Geneva Convention but also some saw the main Red Cross sign as religious in nature. Also, during the time of conflict, it was hard to introduce new (and possibly confusing) symbols to those seeking aid. It was decided to against using the Red Cross in favor for this flag, which was using an already established emblem. (Source)
