The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is a statutory body
in Kenya under the Ministry of Transport. Set up by an Act of Parliament in January 1978,
it has a Board of Directors appointed by the Transport Minister. The KPA was
enlarged in 1986 when it merged with the Kenya Cargo Handling Ltd., an
autonomous state institution, to form a single body responsible for all
aspects of national port development and operations. The Authority’s mandate is
to maintain, operate, improve and regulate all scheduled sea ports situated
along Kenya’s coast. These comprise : Mombasa, Lamu, Malindi, Kilifi, Mtwapa,
Kiunga, Shimoni, Funzi and Vanga.
Mombasa, the largest and busiest port on the East
African coast, is the hub of KPA’s operations. It is a major port of call for
international shipping lines, it serves the needs of governments, business and
industry in Kenya and neighbouring countries including Uganda,
Rwanda,
Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Southern
Sudan,
Ethiopia,
Somalia and Northern Tanzania
(see the KPA website at http://www.kpa.co.ke).
