Background

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is a statutory body in Kenya under the Ministry of Transport. Set up by an Act of Parliament in January 1978, it has a Board of Directors appointed by the Transport Minister. The KPA was enlarged in 1986 when it merged with the Kenya Cargo Handling Ltd., an autonomous state institution,  to form a single body responsible for all aspects of national port development and operations. The Authority’s mandate is to maintain, operate, improve and regulate all scheduled sea ports situated along Kenya’s coast. These comprise : Mombasa, Lamu, Malindi, Kilifi, Mtwapa, Kiunga, Shimoni, Funzi and Vanga.

Mombasa, the largest and busiest port on the East African coast, is the hub of KPA’s operations. It is a major port of call for international shipping lines, it serves the needs of governments, business and industry in Kenya and neighbouring countries including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Northern Tanzania (see the KPA website at http://www.kpa.co.ke).

The weekly "Coastweek Kenya" (#2931 of 04 August 2006) reports that a KPA team will participate in the 27th Kenya Communications Sports Organization Games - (KECOSO), organized in Kakamega from 05 to 12 August 2006.  The photograph above shows KPA Managing Director Abdallah H. Mwaruwa handing over the flag to team manager Harrison Lusigi.  The flag is divided into equal light and dark blue horizontal stripes with the badge of KPA in the centre.
