Danilo I Petrović Njegoš proclaimed himself the Prince and ruler of Montenegro in 1851. His standard preserved in Cetinje is purple with a white crowned double-headed eagle holding a sceptre and orb above a golden lion passant. On the eagle's breasts is the Prince's cypher, in Cyrillic Д. I., that is D. I..

Nikola I succeeded his uncle Danilo I in 1860. His princely standard is red with a white border, and the same emblems as in his uncle's flag, except for the cypher, in Cyrillic Н I, that is NI.Sources: A. Ziggioto (op. cit.) and McCandless and Grosvenor's Flags of the World (1917) [gmc17a]

The royal standard from c. 1900 retained earlier charges, but changes the field to tricolour.

The royal standard around 1910 has been reported with some differences, the lion being replaced by Nikola's cypher in red, which may be due to source inaccuracy.
