This was in an area which was in contact with the Portuguese settlements in Mozambique. It was one of the Sakalava kingdoms (Sakalava is from Arabic Saqaliba, which in its turn was derived from Latin "esclavus": slave) - see also: Menabe. Alternative name: Iboina. Its main town was Majunga. In the second half of the 18th century Iboina was one of the most powerful kingdoms in Madagascar, levying tribute from states on the east coast.
