Wapse village
Wapse village, Westerveld municipality, Drenthe province.
Flag adopted 15 Aug 2000; design: Drents Heraldisch College.
Flagdescription: Seven horizontal stripes proportioned 5:7:25:25:25:7:5,
white - red - white - green - white - red - white, with at 1/3
flaglength a black four-pointed star of 13/14 flagheight with at the
center a white disk bordered red of 1/2 flagheight, charged with red chalice
beaker, decorated black.
The red ring refers to Wapse as an "es"-village (an es
is a low mound); the four points of the star refer to 1.000 items, among
which the four parts of the village: Soerte, Ten Have, Veenhuizen and Veldhuizen.
The chalice beaker symbolizes the urns, found here in large quantities,
the oldest tangible evidence of human presence. A cup like that could be
seen on the municipal flag and arms of Diever, before it was merged into
the present municipality of Westerveld.

And please don't call the Wapsers "Roggenbrijstraampels" as
they may get furious. A "roggenbrijstraampel" is a stick, mostly
holly, used by peasants to stir rye-porridge (poor people's food).
