Akkerwoude villageward
Akkerwoude is a former village, now a ward of Damwoude, the main village
of Dantumadeel in Fryslân province.
Coat of Arms: in gold in base vert charged with a bowed base or charged with
two lying rye-ears, the top one with the stalk sinister, the bottom one
with the stalk dexter; in gold standing on the dividing line three red
castles, opened and windowed , the dexter castle surmounted by a green
alder-leaf.
Flag: two stripes of yellow and red divided chevron-wise with three
chevrons; the height of the apexes is 3/4 flagheight. At 1/10 flagheight
from the top a green horizontal stripe of 1/10 flagheight; bottom left
a white castle of 11/30 flagheight, open and windowed.
Because the village of Akkerwoude has ceased to exist separately the
flag was designed for the society "Vereniging van Dorpsbelangen wijk
Akkerwoude".
The design has been made so that it can also be used for the ward "Murmerwoude"
with another village-emblem. It might also be used for the new village
of Damwoude (see Genealogysk Jierboekje 1996, p.210)
The three castles symbolize the three former villages; the alder-leaf
in the (heraldic) right corner shows the geographical position of the village,
in this case the westernmost of the three. The leaf is also for "woud"-
wood and refers to the wooded ditches in this area.
The hollowed part of the shield symbolizes the sandridge, on which
the villages were built. On the yellow base are two rye-ears, as requested
by the village-society, symbolizing agriculture.
The flag is an abstract simplification of the coat of arms. Instead
of three castles the three former villages are represented by three chevrons,
and the castle refrs to the ward's location. The alder-leaf has been replaced
by the small green stripe.
Design: R.J. Broersma, member of the Fryske Rie foar Heraldyk, in consultation
with the forenamed society.

Note: this flag is the mirror-image of the flag of Dantumawoude.
Note 2: Nickname: squealers.
