Burchwert village
Burchwert (Dutch: Burgwerd) is a village in Wûnseradiel municipality
in the province of Fryslân.
Flag: green, a white fly-diagonal; at the hoist the narrowed municipal
flag.
The diagonal stripes represents meadows. Green is the color of the
"terp" (mound on which the village was built).
Arms: argent a "stins" (fortified house) gules roofed azure in base
a "terp" (mound) vert with two six-pointed mullets.
In the Dutch-Reformed church of Burchwert is a symbolic painting representing
a castle on a "terp", with on each side a star, an ancient attempt to make
a canting representation of the village. The stars are also on the arms
of the Ockinga family, who had two "stinzen" in this village. This
coat of arms is therefore canting: a burgh on a "wier" (alternative
name for a "terp" = mound).
Burchwert is northeast of the city of Bolsward, along the old canal
Leeuwarden - Bolsward, with c. 300 inhabitants. The church dates back to
c. 1150-1200.
