Hartwert village
Hartwert (Dutch: Hartwerd) is a village in Wûnseradiel municipality
in the province of Fryslân.
Flag: blue, a white fly-diagonal; at the hoist the narrowed municipal
flag.
Arms: blue cross couped argent, charged with a heart gules at cross-center,
with a fleur-de-lis or in all quarters.
The white cross is for the former monastery of Bloemkamp (built 1191,
abandoned 1580), also named Oldeklooster (old monastery), a little east
of Hartwert.
The red heart, because in the Middle Ages here was the heart of the
old division of Westergoa: representatives of grietenijen (municipalities)
met here for the diet till 1322.
The fleurs-de-lis are derived from the arms of the Grey Monks (Cistercians),
who were connected to the village for nearly 400 years.
Nickname: "Hartejagers" - heart-hunters - chasing girls must
have been a major occupation of the village-youngsters.
